Philological Restoration of Heritage Surfaces – Villa Borromeo d'Adda, Arcore

Philological Restoration of Heritage Surfaces – Villa Borromeo d'Adda, Arcore

Project Overview:
Philological conservation and architectural restoration of historic floorings within the
monumental Villa Borromeo d'Adda estate in Arcore. Addressing severe material
degradation resulting from prolonged site abandonment, the intervention required the
structural reconstruction and seamless integration of extensive central and perimeter
sections.
Key Highlights:
● Manual Hand-Cutting & Historic Installation Methods: Integration of opus
romanum geometry for perimeter borders paired with fine micro-palladiana for central
fields. Every marble tessera was individually hand-cut on four sides to accurately
replicate historical coursing, alignment, and original chromatic variations.
● Traditional & Engineered Mortar Matrix: Grouting executed using a historical
cocciopesto (crushed terracotta) recipe blended with micro-flakes of site-matched
marbles, stabilized with high-performance modern binders to ensure structural
longevity.
● Matte Historic Surface Finish: Mechanical honing executed to achieve a soft matte
finish, preserving the authentic patina and remaining strictly aligned with heritage
conservation standards.
